This is a blog for NMC 301, OSU Spring 2008.

group post

Two more interviews today – both went alright though I feel that I could’ve brought something more to each. Nevertheless both interviewees were very informative and easy to talk to, and had some very interesting, sometimes surprising information to share.

One thing I immediately noticed from our interviews is how much easier it is to do so in tandem. While interviewing a person on my own, the “flow” was often broken up by my having go back through notes and so forth to find more material for the conversation, things I didn’t want to forget to bring up, and so forth, while with both of us interviewing someone there’s more time for one of us to regroup at any time. Granted, this mostly speaks to my lack of preparedness, I guess.

While still compiling information – there’s still the matter of the questionnaires we’ve sent out to student groups – the structure of the piece as we’d like to see it is starting to become clear. Hopefully at some point between job shifts this weekend or after tomorrow’s field trip for NMC 302, I’ll be able to work some more on our article. If anything I wish we had more time to work on it, but it’s understandable: if anything, deadlines are only going to be a lot worse in a professional setting.

a new group post

Been neglecting this blog of mine. That worry I expressed earlier, about getting too worried about everything at once instead of focusing on items one at a time, may have been something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. But here’s a quick list of developments:

  • Spoke to an official of the Financial Aid office. Fascinating, great stuff.
  • College of Business correspondence was brief yet polite, with some of their advisors sharing some opinions via email. As for a related student group focusing on finances, I have emailed some more questions as well as planning to interview one of them in person in a little bit.
  • I know Matt has plans for interviews and possible multimedia/web 2.0 extras to add to our presentation. We will also attempt to contact one of the campus counselors as far as the effects of stress on students.

So, probably sooner than later, we will be compiling everything we’ve got and start forming our article in terms of its presentation. Personally I think we’ve got a pretty solid base to build from already. I just wish there were more hours in the day…

group post 4 i think

After yesterday’s disappointment, today had a spot of luck from an unexpected source.

In many ways this is a pretty rough time to go around asking people for comments. It’s nearing the end of the term, as well as the school year for the majority of students and staff, with thoughts and plans already turning towards after final exams and beyond. Nevertheless, the College of Business really stepped up: four advisors, despite heavy workloads, offered opinions, contact info, and referrals to other groups that might have information we could use. I have to admit I thought we would get a bigger response from other departments, whom turned out to not be so helpful after all, thus far at least.

I kept in contact with Matt over the phone, though we had some trouble connecting at first, and plan to meet up once again tomorrow.

gr3

Today after classes we met up and looked into several sources. The majority of them couldn’t speak to us and/or were unable to schedule a direct time for us to speak to someone, nevertheless we did get some names, numbers, and business cards, while also leaving the former two. As we traversed from one side of campus to the other (consulting the campus map and all the locations we wanted to hit would probably have saved us a whole lot of time) we also brainstormed some other ideas for our story’s content and presentation.

Afterwards I called the College of Business and was advised to email their advisors, which I later did. Calling Brass Media was a bit problematic thanks to the terrible phone reception in my area, but I was able to leave my name and phone number at least.

group post 2

During class last night we did some more planning about our group project and today we are going to meet again in about twenty minutes. Until then, I’m going to use this post to hold some relevant links:
